Interview – BEAUnz

Hi BEAUnz and welcome to College Radio Charts! Your single, “Voicemail” was just released. Can you tell us about the new track?
Hey! Thanks for having me. Yes, it was inspired by a voicemail I received and I couldn’t help but turn it into art because I felt a lot of people could relate. I like to make music my fans can truly connect with through their own experiences as well.

“Voicemail” follows a string of successful singles including Don’t Wanna Die Young, Shake It, and Control (which currently has over 160K streams on Spotify). Any plans on releasing a full-length album?
I have a few full length projects I’m working on with various producers but as of now I’m going to continue with dropping singles from those projects.

How does being from Portland, Oregon influence your music?
Music here is extremely diverse and the RnB/HipHop scene is still on the rise. I appreciate multiple genres of music though so I believe that contributes to my unique sound.

You’ve worked in a large number of cities including Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami and Seattle. Would you ever consider relocating, or is Portland going to be home for awhile?
I’ll definitely have properties in other cities because it is important to be available for certain opportunities but I really want to bring the RnB/HipHop culture to Portland. I see a lot of potential and the market is growing fast.

You recently released a video for “Be Your Beau.” What was the process like for making the video? How did working on the video compare with making the original track in the studio?
That was the first video I shot & directed myself. I enjoyed the whole process because we (MaxedOut Records) made the entire production from start to finish for both the song and video.

Any plans on making a video for “Voicemail?
Yes! Most definitely, my team is putting a treatment together as we speak. So definitely be on the look out for the video!

Can you talk to us about MaxedOut Records and your publishing company, NIIW Music?
MaxedOut Records was founded by myself, Papa T (formerly known as MaxedOut Tru) and MaxedOut KRC. We decided to join forces in 2020. We have a solid team of professionals that include artists, engineers, producers, videographers & more. We take pride in continuing to grow and be better versions of ourselves.

You started writing at the age of 16 and began recording at 18. When did you know you wanted to be a musician and who were some of your earliest musical influences?
Ya, I started writing because I got suspended from school. I was forced to go my stepdads office all day. I knew I wanted to be an artist after graduating high school, re listening to Cabin Fever 2 by Wiz Khalifa. The main artists who influenced me were Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Trey Songz.

Which artists are you listening to these days? Anyone we should be putting on our radar?
Umm I’ve been pretty locked into my own craft lately but I met some really solid artists in New York during the Daze Summit festival , Fay Allure & Pancho really stood out, there were a lot others though.

You’ve worked with a wide variety of producers including Aside One, Big Jeezy, Drama Relax and Kobe Beats. Are there any artists or producers you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Top artists & producers who come to mind are Chris Brown, SZA, Metro, A boogie, Lil baby but I’m always open to making the best art possible.

Is there one piece of music gear you can’t live without?
Headphones and Universal Audio
