Elena C. Lockleis – Human Connection

As we wrap up 2022 and turn to 2023, our inbox received quite the little gem of a surprise. LA based songwriter Elena C. Lockleis has started off our new year with a beautiful pop single with solid production, wonderful harmonies right where you’d want them, and a powerful message about mental health. Through their music, in addition to takes on love and heartbreak Elena strives to bring more conversations about depression and anxiety to the forefront and “Human Connection” does a fantastic job at doing exactly that. The track works on multiple levels. You will find yourself nodding and grooving to the music without even noticing it as this is one of those songs that just feels right. While certainly not formulaic, “Human Connection” feels like it follows in the tradition and recipes of great songwriters, with the verses and choruses, bells and string swells and all the other musical ingredients all folded in perfectly.

The track really shines, however, when you take a bite into the lyrics.

I get relief for a moment
But it’s just sugar-coated
Back to lonely again

Human connection
I crave affection
I’m lying when I claim I’m okay

Can I just be loved
Can I just be loved

Feels like I’m clashing with my skin
Will I ever win
Loneliness is my best friend

Yes, heavy and serious topics, but Elena C. Lockleis manages to bring these into the spotlight with such skill and grace that you feel like she is offering a helping hand and hug instead of criticism or judgment. It’s an impressive thing they’ve done here, packaging depression and anxiety in such an effortlessly digestible pop nugget. It is so easy to hit repeat on this song. Pairs well with Valerie June, aurally delicious and mentally nutritious at the same time. We could use more songs like “Human Connection” in 2023.

And a brief note to Elena if they’re reading: thank you for this. We’d love a second serving.
