Sephe – twist?d

If you’re seeking an enthralling musical journey through the surreal realms of Vaportrap, look no further than Sephe’s latest release, twist?d. Released just this week, the album is an intricate tapestry of beats, glitches, and dreamy atmospheres that lure you into a sonic labyrinth from which you won’t want to escape.

Stumbling onto Sephe’s music is a bit like uncovering a secret room behind a false wall your closet. The album opens with “Loading….” The first minute is filled with wonderfully glitchy soundscapes, assaulting your senses and letting you know the knobs and dials sometimes need to be tweaked to get the best results. This is followed by a 40 second cool down period letting your ears recover before taking the next step on your journey.

“Skarab” grabs you and pulls you all the way in, the production kicking into full gear with its dynamic rhythm and distorted vocals. The video released for the track reinforces the VHS chaos in a true visual overload. Layer upon layer upon layer, building without ever over-complicating, the production does a great job of juggling everything together without ever dropping a ball.

“shock” follows, with a deeper dive into the electronic music microgenre. Familiar video game sound clips, reminiscent of a simpler time, act as familiar landmarks remembered deep down in the recesses of the subconscious. The track manages to dial up the melancholy of those early days of the internet, such potential and wide open opportunities, limited only by the 56k dial up modem.

“commas” is a jazzier piece, slowing things down a bit yet still keeping the vibe and momentum going thanks to a catchy bass line and delicate percussive loops. This sounds like what Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes would listen to after two sets in Mos Eisley. And rest assured, 3PO, droids are welcome here.

“nil” invites you to go deeper with a deceptively simple intro before spinning your head around 25 seconds into the track. A darker sound, “nil” pushes the production elements even further, phasing and flanging, filtering and sweeping across the frequencies, making the listener question everything.

“problemz.n.issuez” splashes you with some cold water and makes you refocus, as Sephe has so much more to show you. A more driven and edgy guitar riff takes the spotlight here. Jimi’s wah wah trapped inside an Intel Pentium M. It’s certainly a standout on the album and one of my favorites.

“surge” maintains the album’s compelling atmosphere with an array of glitchy sounds, showcasing Sephe’s impeccable sound design and mastery of the genre.

“axiom” dials up the glitches and digital distortion, pushing the medium to the limits and clips all the meters. The track brings us into a more experimental and introspective realm, taking a contemplative approach with its atmospheric elements and haunting melodies.

“goodnite” continues the journey, combining swirling loops and droning bass melodies with ethereal textures. It leaves a lasting impression, a contemplative chapter in this adventurous sonic expedition.

The final track, “guess so.,” presents a fitting conclusion, summarizing the album’s distinctive style and enigmatic atmospheres. It’s a softer album closer, bringing the vocals to the forefront. It’s an interesting choice and certainly brings an element of intimacy to the track.
