“Cast Out Your Light” might be exactly the song we need right now. On first listen, I immediately thought of indie rock band The Mountain Goats, not only in the crystal clear vocals, but also in the structure of the song. “Cast Out Your Light” comes across as deceptively simple, but it’s always building and pushing forward. Clocking in at 5:40, the song takes the necessary time to develop, and breathe. The first 4 minutes are spent constructing the foundation for the final 1:40. The drums and electric guitar are reserved until the third verse! While The Mountain Goats thrive in the cozy indie setting, “Cast Out Your Light” aims much higher. Much like a fine five course meal, Radio Drive carefully serves the listener tasty musical morsels at a perfectly calculated pace. And unlike the fast food pop fare that usually clocks in under 3 minutes, “Cast Out Your Light” embraces the extra time it takes to fully enjoy the song. Don’t rush the chef, or the songwriter. The end result is an epic song that would feel right at home in a Coldplay stadium setlist.
It’s no surprise Radio Drive has several songwriting awards and television placements. The music is big. Very big. Much like those exquisite chef cooked meals, “Cast Out Your Light” will stick with you long after the final notes fade. On the surface it might appear simple, but “Cast out Your Light” is expertly constructed using the finest of ingredients, combined to make something truly special.
