In a music environment often dominated by overproduced tracks and fleeting trends, Maddison Falls’ “When I See You” is a breath of fresh air. Released on July 8th, the single highlights the duo’s ability to meld classic rock influences with a contemporary indie sound, creating something uniquely their own.
Julien Fiore and Joel Soto, the teenage masterminds behind Maddison Falls, have crafted a song that feels both nostalgic and innovative. Fiore’s lead vocals are strikingly emotive, carrying a sense of earnestness that’s hard to come by. His vocals (including haunting background vocals and spoken word bridge reminiscent of Soul Coughing’s “The Incumbent”), paired with Soto’s deft guitar lines, creates a sonic landscape that’s rich and textured, and refreshingly unpretentious.
The track’s charm lies in its simplicity. The interplay between Fiore and Soto is seamless, each complementing the other in a way that feels organic and intuitive. It’s clear that their bond, forged through countless hours of songwriting and performance, is the bedrock of their sound.
While the production is clean and professional, it never overshadows the raw talent of the duo. There’s a restraint here that’s admirable, a confidence in their musicality that allows the song to breathe. “When I See You” doesn’t rely on gimmicks or over-the-top production tricks; instead, it shines on the strength of its songwriting and the undeniable chemistry of its creators.
While “When I See You” is undeniably a strong single, it will be interesting to see how Maddison Falls evolves their sound in future releases. They’ve set a high bar for themselves with this track, and the music world will be watching to see if they can continue to innovate and surprise. For now, though, “When I See You” is a testament to their burgeoning talent and a promising sign of what’s to come.
The video for “When I See You” also launched today. While their previous music video for “Both Sides” was filmed using a full professional crew and high-end cameras, this time around the band shot and edited everything using only an iPhone. “When I See You” is about the performances, not so much about the expensive camera shots. That being said, Maddison Falls was still able to pull off some stunning feats with cloning and duplicating Joel and Julien, all using smartphone technology exclusively. iMpressive.
