Hi Stephanie and welcome to College Radio Charts! How has your 2025 been so far?
Hey there! I’m still trying to catch my breath from last year!
Your new single, “Day by Day,” just dropped. What was the spark that lit the fire for this song?
My songwriting is the overflow of my heart. It’s my form of journaling. “Day by Day” was birthed from a difficult season in my life. If I’m honest, I’m still in the struggle.
Your music blends gospel, R&B, and soul with deeply personal lyrics. How do you find the balance between vulnerability and empowerment in your songwriting?
Pouring encouragement into my listeners is my ultimate goal. I write from the soul and this ensures that the lyrics will be raw and relatable, and hopefully empowering.
Growing up with a jazz musician grandmother must have been incredible. What’s the biggest lesson she passed down to you about music—or life?
Some of my earliest memories are centered on sitting next to my “Mimi” on her piano bench while she sang her heart out. Music is in my blood because of this early exposure. However, the way she loved people and made everyone feel valued made the biggest impact on me.
Besides your grandmother, did you come from a very musical family? What were some of your earliest musical memories?
I’ll never forget my dad taking guitar lessons when I was a kid. We spent hours harmonizing to classics like “Country Roads.”
You use the hashtag #musicwithamessage on social media. If your music could deliver just one message to the world, what would it be?
I want people to feel uplifted after listening to my songs. No matter how honest and raw the mood, I always try to end on a hopeful note.
Faith plays a big role in your journey and your artistry. How does your spirituality influence the way you write and perform?
I like to think I created a new genre I call “Faith Infused Soul Music.” I gently embed messages of faith and hope in my music without preaching. I also happen to be on staff at my church as a Worship Leader.
Your 2019 debut album, Dark to Light, was an intimate look at overcoming hardship. Looking back, what’s the most important thing you learned about yourself through that project?
I’m so thankful that songwriting is my constant companion through the hills and valleys of life. I’ve learned that it’s okay to talk about things that challenge and disappoint us. This is a powerful reminder that we’re not alone in the journey.
“Day by Day” feels like a title that suggests both patience and perseverance. Does it reflect where you are personally and creatively right now?
I’m without a doubt taking life day by day right now. 2024 was filled with tough life lessons. I’m choosing to slow down and have better boundaries these days. I’m leaning into my faith and listening to my heart.
You’ve been featured on BBC Radio and worked with artists from around the world. What’s been your most unexpected or surreal career moment so far?
As an independent artist, I’ve treasured the opportunity to connect and create with artists globally. I’ve had a few instances when people have approached me and told me my music has made a difference in their life. This is so humbling.
Midwest artists often bring a certain rawness and honesty to their music. How has being based in Southern Indiana influenced your sound and perspective? What is the musical community like there?
This part of the country is known for being friendly and hospitable. These qualities embody encouragement and I’m all about encouraging people with my message of hope. Even though I reside in Southern Indiana, I’m minutes from Louisville, Kentucky, where the music scene is thriving. They have some super cool venues.
From your debut to now, how has your songwriting evolved? Do you write differently now than you did when you started?
I actually think I’ve grown more confident telling my story and admitting it’s okay to not be okay. Landing on hope is still the goal.
You’ve got a voice that feels both timeless and fresh. Who are some of your influences and which artists, past or present, do you feel most connected to vocally?
Wow! Thank you! I’m a big fan of Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder, and the classic Etta James. I listen to lots of independent artists as well.
What’s your creative process like? Are you the type to chase inspiration when it strikes, or do you have a structured routine for writing?
I’m the true definition of a free spirit. I always follow the creative flow. I feel inspired in the shower, when I’m driving, and when I’m attempting to fall asleep at night. I’m constantly recording lyrics and melodies on my Voice Memos on my phone so I don’t forget!
With social media playing such a big role in connecting artists to fans, how do you navigate staying authentic while growing your audience?
I try to personally interact with every person who reaches out in support of my craft. I don’t keep my struggles inside. I write about them, and this relatable quality helps people feel connected.
If you could collaborate with any artist, living or gone, who would be your dream duet partner and why?
That’s an easy one! I’d love to collaborate with my jazz musician grandmother, of course. She’s busy singing with the angels in Heaven these days
Looking ahead, what’s next for Stephanie Heitz? Can we expect more singles, a full-length album, or even a tour?
I’m very prolific with my songwriting. You can absolutely expect a constant flow of singles. I’m considering an unplugged EP with very personal songs accompanied by my ukulele. More gigs are definitely on the agenda as well.
Thank you so much for stopping by. Where can people go to find out more about you and your music?
