Interview – Lil’Co

Hello Lil’Co and thank you for taking some time to spend with us today. How has 2024 been treating you so far?
Hey, 2024 has blessed me with some amazing opportunities to look forward to this year!

Can you tell us about your upcoming song “Prevail” and what inspired its creation?
I wrote Prevail as a reminder to myself and others that no one can stop you from achieving anything you want. Many of us face obstacles and feel like we’re overlooked or slighted, but we also must know that no one can stop you but you. The hook is inspired by Black Rob’s song called Whoa!

You’re originally from South Carolina. How has your background from there influenced your music and artistic style? Do you see regional influences playing a role in shaping your future projects?
Being from the South keeps me motivated even more, because many of us do not make it far where I’m from, and there’s not a lot of support, so makes me that much more hungry. Prevail has somewhat of a down south sound, so there’s an influence. Lately I’ve been into a a pop and Afrobeat phase, however Prevail channels a southern urban sound to certain degree.

You’ve been making music since the age of 4. Did you come from a musical family? What initially drew you to music, and how has your relationship with it evolved over the years?
My whole family was into music in some sort of way. My Grandfather was in a well known gospel group called Gospel Ray and the Faithful Sons, my dad and my uncle played guitar, my mom side of the family all sing, so music was all around me! The person who drew me to music was Michael Jackson. When I first heard his music and saw his videos, that’s honestly what made me want to be an artist. My relationship with music has somewhat evolved, but the passion is still the same!

Who were some of your earliest musical influences when you started? Who inspires you today?
Earlier influences includes Michael Jackson of course, but also Usher, Chris Brown, Bruno Mars etc. An artist who inspires me today is Owl City. He has his own sound, own lane, and is extremely talented.

Your approach to the music industry is described as slightly different. Could you elaborate on what sets your approach apart from other emerging artists, and how it reflects in your music?
I’m a visionary, so I like to bring what’s in my head to the stage. I’m big on theatrics & shock value in my stage performances, so as a local artist still for now, you rarely find that. Also, I’m very versatile with my sound and can switch between genres easily to tell any story I’m wanting to convey.

Can you walk us through and describe your creative process when developing new music?
Before I do anything musically, I have to have an experience and be inspired to. Once I have that inspiration, I think of a sound I want to tap into. When I’ve found that sound, I look for a producer who can execute the sound and collaborate with a beat/instrumental. Next is the writing process. After the song is written, I study the lyrics, tap in to what I’m saying, and perfect the delivery of the song. Then, the studio to record, mix and master. Building confidence to present it lol, and the final step, releasing it to the world.

Being a multi-talented artist in pop, hip-hop, and R&B, how do you navigate and balance between these genres while maintaining a unique Lil’Co sound?
I feel that since my voice is distinct, no matter what beat I’m over, it will have that Lil’Co sound. I also do certain inflections or adlibs that are my signature so to speak.

Having toured the United States twice, could you share some memorable moments or experiences from your tours that have had a significant impact on your musical journey?
One is being with a team of amazing people who share the same passion to keep you motivated while doing high energy shows every other night. Another, is making an impact on the audience, which to me is one of the best feelings! Touring and performing is my favorite part about being an artist because I truly feel my most creative and expressive on stage.

You’re known for your theatrical performances and shock value on stage. What can fans expect from a Lil’Co live show, and what do you hope they take away from them?
Fans can expect some tricks or stunts I’ll do on stage, some good choreo, some dope outfits/costumes, and an interesting story. What I hope anyone will take away from a Lil’Co show is inspiration. I want them to feel every emotion, and reflect.

Your Instagram page showcases various aspects of your life and career. How do you leverage social media platforms like Instagram to connect with your fans and share your journey as an artist?
Instagram is definitely a safe place for my supporters and I to interact without judgement. I talk to them via the DM’s, they comment on my posts, and the favorite is when I go live and interact.

How do you see your music evolving in the future, and are there any new directions or styles you’re eager to explore?
My music is ever evolving due to the fact that every project I like to totally switch my sound from anything I’ve done before, but I definitely would be eager to do some soft rock since I have never put out anything rock publicly.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are looking to make their mark in the music industry?
Always listen to your inner self over anybody else. Stay true to who you are and let no one take you off your course. Also I would recommend them listen to prevail!
