Interview – Julian Joel

Welcome to College Radio Charts, Julian! How has your September been so far?
September has been flying by for me! It’s been great—I’m really enjoying the change in weather. The crispness in the air is invigorating, and I’m thrilled with the traction my new single is gaining. It feels like a fresh start, and I’m excited to share more of my music with the world!

Your new single “Pull Up” feels like such a personal anthem. Can you tell us where this song came from?
“Pull Up” is deeply personal for me. It reflects my journey of realizing the importance of taking a step back and prioritizing what truly matters—family, selfcare, and mental well-being. Life can get overwhelming, and this song is a reminder to pause, reassess, and find balance amidst the chaos.

You grew up in Detroit, a city with deep musical roots. How has the city’s musical history, especially Motown, influenced your sound?
Motown has had a tremendous influence on my music. Growing up in Detroit, I was surrounded by its rich musical heritage. My parents introduced me to legends like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Supremes. Listening to their storytelling and unforgettable melodies shaped my approach to songwriting. Even artists outside of Motown Records, like Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin, taught me the power of narrative in music, which I strive to incorporate into my own work.

Did you come from a musical family?
Absolutely! My entire family is steeped in music. My Grandma Dorothy performed major gigs in North Carolina with her sisters, which inspired my dad. My parents were involved in the Mattie Moss choir, and their passion for music has trickled down to me and my siblings. We all play instruments, sing, and have our own musical projects, creating a legacy of music in our family.

What are some of your earliest musical memories? And what was your first concert?
One of my earliest musical memories is from preschool when I participated in a Pajama Concert for graduation. I wore this hilarious Barney outfit paired with black house shoes, singing my heart out in the front row with my preschool choir. It was a fun and carefree moment that solidified my love for performing. My first concert, however, was a family affair where I got to see some local artists that really inspired me!

Your sound blends gospel, soul, and country effortlessly. Was that a conscious decision, or did it come naturally as you developed your style?
It definitely came naturally! For a long time, I tried to box myself into the gospel genre because that’s where I started. But as I explored more, I realized that my musical influences were diverse. By embracing different genres and focusing on my authentic self, I found a unique sound that reflects all parts of my musical journey.

“Pull Up” touches on the importance of reprioritizing life and well-being. Was there a specific moment in your life that inspired this theme?
The inspiration for “Pull Up” comes from my entire life experience. It’s a culmination of moments where I had to remind myself to step back and evaluate my priorities. It serves as a sequel to my earlier single “PTO,” which also delves into the necessity of taking breaks and cherishing what’s important. These songs together tell a story of growth and reflection.

Working with artists like Kira Daffin and Carla Cooke must have been incredible. What was the biggest lesson you took away from collaborating with such iconic voices?
Collaborating with Kira Daffin and Carla Cooke has been one of the highlights of my career. The biggest lesson I learned from them is the importance of authenticity and leaving everything on the stage during a performance. They both have such a powerful stage presence, and watching them has taught me to connect deeply with my audience and to give my all in every performance.

As an artist who transcends genres, do you ever feel pressure to fit into one musical category, or do you embrace that cross-genre identity?
I wholeheartedly embrace my cross-genre identity! I believe that as artists, we’re not meant to fit into just one box. I grew up listening to gospel, R&B, funk, country, folk, hip-hop, and even classical music. Each genre has shaped who I am. My stories and experiences are what define me, not a single sound. I want to share that versatility with my audience.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while creating “Pull Up,” and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was overcoming my own self-doubt and the tendency to compare myself to other artists. I had to learn to let the song be what it needed to be without outside influences clouding my vision. It was a process of selfdiscovery that ultimately led to a more authentic creation.

With a single as powerful as “Pull Up,” where do you see your sound evolving next? Are there any new directions or genres you’re excited to explore?
I’m really excited about the future! I’m allowing myself to flow with the music and see where it takes me. I’m open to exploring new genres and incorporating different sounds into my work. It’s all about following my instincts and allowing creativity to lead the way.

There’s a timeless quality to your music, but also something very fresh and contemporary. How do you balance respecting the traditions of genres like gospel and soul while still pushing them forward?
I think the key is authenticity and relatability. Gospel, soul, and country resonate with people because they come from a place of genuine emotion and storytelling. I strive to grow as a person and artist, drawing from my life experiences. By doing this, I can create melodies and lyrics that are both timeless and contemporary.

You’ve cited Marvin Gaye, Darius Rucker, and Marvin Winans as influences. What do you think connects these artists, and how do you channel their spirit into your music?
Also, Israel Houghton. What connects these artists is their pure soul and authenticity. They didn’t conform to trends; instead, they focused on their true selves. Their music is raw and deeply soulful, and I channel that  by staying true to my own voice and experiences. I aim to create music that feels genuine and connects with listeners on an emotional level.

Are there any plans to tour or perform live in the near future?
Yes! I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be performing in Nashville at Tin Roof on Broadway on September 25. It’s an exciting opportunity to share my music live and connect with fans. I can’t wait!
