Irish born Martin Feral just dropped his latest single “Down in the Dirt” and it sounds like it’s coming straight out of a dusty Texas roadhouse. Full of crunchy guitars and a driving bass line, the bluesy number would be right at home on any ZZ Top playlist. Feral, who now calls Coventry in England home, started playing guitar at the age of 12 and his comfort and confidence certainly shows.
Feral’s guitar playing has a relaxed and almost playful spin on classic rock, like he doesn’t take himself too seriously. This sly tongue-in-cheek style really only works when the performer has the skills to pull it off, and Feral certainly does. Much like Jack White, Martin Feral definitely feels like he’s an analytical student of the past guitar giants, taking his favorite parts of Gallagher, Page, Gibbons, Hetfield (and Hammett) and blending them into his own signature style and sound.
“Down in the Dirt” is not be reinventing the wheel, and it’s clear Martin Feral isn’t trying to. Instead, he continues to explore the blues/rock genres where he is allowed to stretch and flex like so many greats before him. It’s where Feral feels right at home.
