Wizard Death – 4

Wizard Death’s latest album, 4, was released on November 1st and has already received a lot of plays here at the office. First off, don’t let the name scare you. You have nothing to be afraid of here. Beginning in Washington, D.C. in late 2018, Wizard Death has since relocated to Los Angeles and released four full-length albums. Originally inspired by the vibrant lo-fi beatmaker online community in the 2010’s, Wizard Death continues to expand and evolve in many musical directions while always retaining their signature ethereal and minimalistic sensibility.

4 starts off with “Intro,” a perfect doorway for you to enter the lush worlds of Wizard Death. You can feel your blood pressure lower as the tranquil beats encourage you to relax and unwind. “Sweet Heart” raises the tempo and intensity, but it’s still chill enough to not jar you from your peaceful state. “Sap (ft. Soothe-Slayer)” is one of the early standouts. Easing back into a relaxed yet focused state, the track just sounds like what you’d imagine ‘balance’ sounds like.

Wizard Death continues another favorite of ours, “hvn,” which along with “garden” sound like long-lost outtakes from a Postal Service album. While the tempos change, the mood remains a constant ‘chill’ which is perfect for listening on repeat. Perhaps it’s this along with the underlying mood of productivity that 4 creates which makes it one of our favorite releases in the second half of 2022. Another gem, “bby,” has all of the warmth and charm of a Stranger Things track without any of the tension or jumpscares. It’s like the theme from Wii Sports came back from art school with a new stash of space jazz cassettes they’d like to share with you along with some pour over coffee. We’re adding this one to our collection and will be revisiting it often! Highly recommended.
